My Story

My Journey
From Bud to Bloom

Hi I am Maria Trinidad, growing up I didn't always love my hair. Like many others, I struggled with frizz, dryness, not knowing I had curls. I constantly felt like my hair didn't measure up to societal beauty standards. On TV shows or in magazines. I would notice girls with hair like mine were portrayed as "the outcast". It hurt and I turned to relax my hair by the age of 13. For years, I would use extreme amount of heat and chemical treatments to have my curls altered and trying to fit within that mold that society considered beautiful. I didn't want to be labeled as "the outcast". But that came with a high cost, my hair became thin, frail and lifeless. I hated it.  "Why wasn't I blessed with long straight hair?, Why do I have to endure the pain of relaxers and burning, tingling sensation." Looking in the mirror, I didn't like what I saw. I continued to cause irreparable damage for years, all in attempt to fit in a beauty standard of beauty that wasn't mine.

Everything changed when a friend and a new hairstylist both told me," You don't have bad or unruly hair, you have curly hair." At first, I didn't believe them. Me? Curly hair? But their words sparked something in me.  I started researching obsessively, I learned about ingredients, products, techniques, the curly girl method. I found out about harsh chemicals I'd been using weren't ideal for curly hair and began understanding what my hair needed to thrive.

For the first time in years, I began to love my natural hair pattern. I saw my hair as the crown God has blessed me with, and all I wanted to do was to help it bloom. I have been natural since 2015 and I can confidently say: I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO RELAXERS. Along my journey,  I learned that I wasn't alone. I've encountered many that faced similar struggles, unsure how to embrace their natural curl pattern. Helping others learn to love and care for their hair brings me so much joy. That's why I created Crown In Bloom, to be a guide, a resource and maybe even a fairy godmother in your curly hair Cinderella story. Let's bloom together!
